Bargain Bin Coincidence?
I love picking up random books that I find on bargain shelves at the bookstore. Lately, one in particular really piqued my curiosity. It’s called When God Winks At You by SQuire Rushnell.
This book proposes the idea that there are no such things as coincidences. In fact, what you think of as coincidences are actually specific messages that God is sending directly to you!
I love this idea, and I think it’s absolutely spot on!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve prayed expecting direct answers from the Lord, only to hear silence. In those times, I’ve feared that God wasn’t paying attention to me, or that perhaps I was asking the wrong questions (like “why don’t I turn pink when I eat shrimp?”) or praying for the wrong things (like “please turn me pink… I want to freak out my friends”).
Sidenote – there’s no such thing as asking the wrong questions. Even if they are seafood related.
What God Winks helped me to understand is that God not only does things on His own time (which might be “right away” to Him), but that He tends to be more interested in signs and wonders than in words.
And He speaks to you in a way that only you would be able to understand.
I used to think that coincidences were just these random things that I was associating together in my head. How could there be anything to them if I’m the only one seeing or experiencing them?
But that’s the thing – those “God winks” are designed specifically for you! You’re the only one who would see or experience them.
They’re a wonderful reminder that God really is there for you after all.
When Coincidences Happen
Coincidences – or “God winks” – can happen anywhere at anytime. Most often, they are going to happen when you least expect them.
But if that’s the case, how do we know we will catch them when they happen? What if, because we aren’t expecting them, we don’t notice them?
My first piece of advice is simply to keep an open mind. If something random happens that has a surprising meaning to you, explore that. You have to be willing to accept these messages when God sends them.
The next thing I would say is don’t fret. God is constantly trying to communicate with you. Probably more than you try to communicate with Him. If there’s something you miss, He’ll catch you again soon.
But the truth is, it’s highly unlikely you’ll miss anything. God knows you better than you know yourself. He knows the right cues to get your attention.
