Why Is Forgiveness Important To God?

by Ender Bowen / Thursday, 01 August 2024 / Published in What Does The Bible Say About Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a word that carries unfathomable weight, both divine and human. But why is forgiveness so important to God? Let’s dive into the heart of this profound mystery, drawing from the Bible and wisdom from Christian thought leaders.

The Divine Nature of Forgiveness

In the Bible, God describes Himself as “Compassionate and Gracious, slow to anger, abounding in Love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:6-7). Forgiveness isn’t just something God does; it’s who He is. It’s embedded in His very character. Imagine a painter whose essence infuses every stroke on the canvas, or the relationship that a songwriter or musician has with a piece of music. That’s God with forgiveness. It’s an expression of His Love and Mercy, an invitation for us to be reconciled with Him.

When you think about forgiveness, consider the idea of being reconciled with another person, regardless of who is doing the forgiving. There’s a transaction happening here, which makes sense because, in many ways, a “debt” is being wiped out.

Restoring Relationships

Have you ever felt as though there’s a wall between you and God? That’s what sin does. It separates us from Him. But God, in His infinite Grace, uses forgiveness to tear down that wall, like a failsafe or backdoor into His Love. Think about the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). The son squanders his inheritance, losing nearly everything he has as he lives a life of indulgence. But the father is there, arms wide open, ready to forgive and restore their relationship. This parable isn’t just a nice story; it’s a glimpse into God’s heart. He’s always ready to forgive, always eager to welcome us back.

Keep this in mind when you’re considering whether or not to forgive. How can you provide that other person a glimpse into your heart? Likewise, if someone has hurt you and has genuinely apologized, what kind of glimpse does that give you into theirs? How do you follow God’s example and not just be ready to forgive, but be eager to?

The Ethical Mandate

Here’s where it gets personal. Jesus didn’t just suggest forgiveness; He commanded it. In Matthew 6:14-15, He says, “If you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

It seems pretty clear-cut, doesn’t it? You can practically see the wagging finger. I get that this sounds rather conditional, but try to think of it more like a function of the universe. You can’t conceivably have unlimited Joy—either in God or with another person—without an open heart, Compassion, and, in the event of a transgression, reconciliation. Because of this, forgiveness is non-negotiable for Christians. It’s a reflection of God’s justice and Mercy. By forgiving others, we mirror His character, showing the world what God’s Love looks like in action.

Healing for the Soul

Holding onto grudges is toxic. It eats away at your peace, your Joy, your spiritual health. Lewis B. Smedes nails it in The Art of Forgiving: “To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.” The Bible echoes this in Ephesians 4:31-32, urging us to ditch bitterness and embrace Compassion and forgiveness. When we forgive, we’re not just freeing the offender; we’re freeing ourselves from a prison of resentment. We relieve the burden on that other person, and we relieve that burden on ourselves. Forgiveness removes a weight that allows us to stand upright, as God intended.

Don’t forget He always intended for the person you’re forgiving to stand upright too.

Kingdom Manifestation

Forgiveness isn’t just a personal virtue; it’s a glimpse of God’s Kingdom on earth. In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus links divine and human forgiveness: “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” (Matthew 6:12). When we forgive, we’re living out Kingdom values. C.S. Lewis, in Mere Christianity, points out that forgiveness is a radical, transformative act. It’s a powerful witness to the world, showing that God’s Kingdom is about Mercy, Grace, and Love.

Consider, too, that forgiveness isn’t a passive or dismissive act; it’s intentional and purposeful. It’s also very personal. When we think about demonstrating God’s Kingdom to others via forgiveness, this personal aspect is how we come to know that other person’s struggles, vices, virtues, and, ultimately, their heart. All thanks to the power of Compassion.

Why It Matters to God

So why is forgiveness so crucial to God? Because it embodies His essence, heals broken relationships, fulfills His commands, promotes spiritual health, and showcases His Kingdom. Through forgiveness, God’s Mercy flows, inviting us into a deeper relationship with Him. It’s a divine act that transforms not only us but the world around us as well.

Forgiveness is more than a nice idea; it’s a divine imperative. It’s God’s way of mending the broken, healing the wounded, and showcasing His boundless Love. In practicing forgiveness, we align ourselves with God’s heart, becoming conduits of His Grace in a world that desperately needs it. In the end, forgiveness is God’s gift to us. A pathway to peace, a bridge to reconciliation, a glimpse of heaven on earth. It’s a reflection of His infinite Mercy and a call for us to live out that Mercy every day.
